It’s not often that I feel the urge to make the pilgrimage to neighbourhoods above Avenida Diagonal. Call me lazy, call me close-minded but I usually find everything I need in Sant Antoni, Borne, Eixample, Raval and el Gótico. So I prepared my excursion kit and headed up to a new place that has been open for around two months: Victoria’s Cakes.
Located on the quiet Laforja street in the Sant Gervasi neighbourhood, Victoria’s Cakes is all about desserts. From cakes, of course, to cupcakes, breakfast croissants to cookies, all sugar-cravings are covered. Victoria is a whiz in the kitchen, preparing custom-made cakes for special events, celebrations and weddings.
Whether you’re searching for a calm breakfast nook, a mid-morning snack or just really need something sweet, Victoria’s Cakes has everything covered. There are even short cooking courses so that customers can bring part of the magic home to their own kitchens. The space is light and airy, filled with cute French-style details, from white café chairs to polka-dot wallpaper. There is a sense of tranquillity, there seems to be no rush. There are magazines to leaf through and a small selection of cooking utensils such as cupcake cases.
I’ve said many times before, the key is in the details and there are lots of little things that make Victoria’s Cakes a perfect whole. Often, something is usually only as good as the sum of all the perfect, little things. Victoria is incredibly friendly and helpful, whippet-thin, which is impressive. I would be gorging on the delicious food all the while…
Of course, I couldn’t resist trying one of the cupcakes; red velvet is usually my favourite choice. The base was spongy and the cream-cheese frosting was perfection. Victoria’s Cakes is well-worth the trip up to Sant Gervasi.
