Still reeling from the shock of commercial brands being included in the 080 line-up, and to add insult to injury, TCN was the brand in charge of opening the event proceedings on Tuesday. It was the first time that we got to see the spectacular setting of the University venue for this new edition of 080 Barcelona Fashion, which completely eclipsed the bland TCN proposals. Spectacular to say the least, the setting manages to make 080 seem like an important fashion event.
Miriam Ponsa hit that perfect note of balanced style, technique and inspiration. (Catalana hasta la medula), Ponsa manages to take typical Catalan imagery, concepts, designs and traditions, twist them around and present gorgeous pieces on models that looked just like porcelain dolls.
Titled “Festa Mayor”, the collection is a tribute to Catalan festivals, recovering bits and bobs of traditional garments that are crafted into beautiful pieces. Although some find the whole to be overwhelming, Ponsa’s garments translate extremely well into different styles and wardrobes. She seems to generate a certain animosity in people, which is always curious to observe. Her work is a cut above many of the other participants during 080; maybe said animosity is just a case of pure envy.
The show started and finished with “capgrossos“, usually worn by revellers during certain Catalan fiestas. Aside from these huge heads, the other models all wore stiff, white rope wigs and sported flawless porcelain make-up. The combination of the models perfectness with the rough-and-tumble concepts of Catalan traditions represented in the clothes was further heightened by the gorgeous setting. The high, gilt arches, the water-shiny black and white floor, the leafy gardens just visible in the background.
I am lucky to be attending the shows with the photographer Ana Mogo, who is taking all of my lovely pictures. It’s so much more fun to be at 080 with someone to have a laugh and a chat. We’ve seen several of the other shows and they don’t come even close to the beauty and magnificence of Miriam Ponsa’s work. There are still two days left and the only other person who can compete at the same level as Ponsa is Bolaño. I’m very much looking forward to his show.
