Natalie Portman managed to clinch the Oscar for Best Actress with her starring role in Black Swan. If you haven’t yet seen this film, what are you waiting for? This American psychological thriller directed by Darren Aronofsky is brilliant and spine-tingling.
Many of the costumes for Black Swan were designed by the Mulleavy sisters, better known as the force behind Rodarte. There has been much torment, gossip and controversy over the film’s wardrobe. Amy Westcott is the official costume designer and the Mulleavy duo contributed various designs. They didn’t negotiate their film rights, so any official award nominations would be for Amy Westcott. The movie is filmed in a grainy quality which further adds textural depth to the story of a young ballerina’s descent into utter confusion, darkness and personal madness. To all of you doubters out there, Natalie Portman trained six hours every single day to be able to dance all of her scenes. There are only a few moments where a professional dancer jumps in.
It is interesting to point out the importance that mirrors have in this story. The reflection of oneself, of the soul, the duality. The hidden meanings, the reflected significance. The mirrors add further layers to a panic-stricken story.
Winona Ryder makes some brief appearance as the retired star, a role that closely matches her current status in life. Mila Kunis is exquisite as Portman’s rival. Who would have thought that the cute girl from “That ’70s Show” could come so far?!
See for yourself, go to the movies. Here is the trailer, but I strongly recommend not seeing it as it gives a little too much away…
