Having opened just a few months ago, Cornelia and Co is reigning supreme on that prime stretch of Calle Valencia that is so food-forward at the moment. “Subtitled” The Daily Picnic Store, Cornelia and Co is a restaurant, bakery, café and gourmet shop all rolled into one.
And I have to admit that I am very upset! I’d been looking forward to trying out their lovely food and I was not disappointed. The huge, enormous problem are the prices. Cornelia and Co is wildly overpriced and yet, it is always full. Who is eating there? Those strange people, otherwise known as the rich of Barcelona. They have ventured down, below Diagonal, to fill the tables of this lovely place. The amount of fur that paraded before my eyes during one and a half hours was unending! Aside from the pelts, the sheer rudeness of the diners to the wait staff was enough to turn my appetite almost completely off. Be prepared to get the “once-over” from the surrounding tables.
Without a doubt, Cornelia and Co is absolutely beautiful. High ceilings, mismatched furniture, exquisite attention to detail. The entire place breathes an aura of the best of New York-style joints. The bakery section is located on the left, straight after entering. Here there are different types of bread, piles of gleaming brioches, cookies, cakes, brownies, enough sweet treats to keep me running for practically forever…
The space is a big C-shape with a good amount of space dedicated to the eating areas. Around many of the walls, there are shelves filled with gourmet products. The mini pots of ketchup are strangely cheap at 0,80 centímos compared to other items such as the 95 euro balsamic vinegar.
Aside from the pre-cut and packages meats and cheeses, there is a proper meat counter and a refrigerated fromagerie. An expert is on-hand to dole out advise, aiding the customer to a successful selection and dispensing with tips and tricks to concoct the perfect cheese board.
So what did I eat? I shared a tiny bean salad, which was one of the best that I have ever had in my life. I have tried to no avail to recreate this salad at home but I don’t come anywhere close. The beans were so tender and vinaigrette so perfect. I also shared a measly four pieces of sorrentino pasta. Thank heavens for the bread to mop up the delicious sauce that was left on the plate. For dessert, a luscious chocolate and raspberry pie. That was rounded off with a water, also shared and a coffee. Total amount? 37 euros. We left hungry. We shared food that should have been for one person and that one person would still be left hungry. 37 euros! As I said, wildly over priced. Do I want to go back? Yes! I can’t stop dreaming about the place. This is love and hate all rolled into one. I just wish they’d put together a lunch menu and maybe that would be slightly cheaper…

Fui también. Me gustó mucho la comida y me dieron miedo las señoras con los abrigos de animales peludos. Coincido: extremadamente caro.
