What to do with so much free time between holiday and holiday? This is a great moment to check out Barcelona’s exhibitions as people will be too busy eating and drinking to spend time at the museums. If you love all things that glitter and shine, don’t miss the jewellery exhibit at MNAC.
Artist’s Jewels: From Modernism to the Avant-Garde, is a small, temporary show being held at the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña. Focusing on jewellery from the 20th century, the necklaces and rings, bracelets and brooches on display are the living testimony of the vast, artistic skills of some of Spain’s renown artists.
The exhibition opens with a long-line of drawer-like vitrines in which there are two to three pieces of jewellery. The effect is stunning, absolutely breathtaking. Considering my penchant for brooches, it was an utter temptation to break the glass, scope out the glittering pieces and run away. Sigh…
The following rooms offer an exceptional concept: on the one side, original pieces of artwork by selected artists, with a few samples of jewellery by each corresponding artist. Unfortunately, things go rapidly downhill from here. The problem resides in that there isn’t always a corresponding piece of art…
The two audiovisuals didn’t add any extra depth to the exhibit’s concept and towards the end, there are a series of photographs and sequined garments, portraying the role of the gem in fashion. The space is also slightly too big and everything just seems to peter out. Such a pity, as the pieces on display are worthy of a much better setting.
