Christmas was a complete eye-sore last year in Barcelona and for 2010, the illumination continues in the same wretched vein. In a city so hyped on being the design capital of Spain, you would think that just a little thought and care would be placed on producing the best possible visual effects for the festivities.
Who is in charge of the selection? Hot-pink electric trees, blue abounds as the colour of choice (which is completely incomprehensible), the SQUARE is the preferred shape… I will never understand the squares. Parading down some of Barcelona’s most important streets there are blue, green and white squares. I hang my head in shame every time I see them. The city can spend 6 million euros on the bloody Pope’s visit and can’t scrape together some decent lighting? Obviously this is just symptomatic of the more serious, unresolved problems of Barcelona.
Paseo de Gracia has to deal with sickly alien-like Christmas lights shaped like chandeliers. After last year’s painful display, everyone thought that this year would be different, that it had just been a hiccup. Well, it seems like these lights are here to stay. I would close down Barcelona to the outside world until the Xmas season is over, it’s just too embarrassing. The city must have the worst lights in all of Europe.
At least the hotels seem to get the Christmas concept right, decking their façades with golden and silver lights, stars and trees. Maybe a little too classical, but classical will always beat purposeless ugliness…
