Mariscal a la Pedrera

Sometimes it’s good to ditch a die-hard opinion. Sometimes it’s OK to change one’s mind. Sometimes it’s alright to meet halfway, to yield a bit. Love him or hate him, Mariscal usually causes no grey areas, but things are starting to change.

Expo Mariscal a la Pedrera

The Mariscal exhibition at La Pedrera is, quite simply, brilliant. From the past 29th of September until the 30th of January, this quirky show structured in 6 different parts covers the artist’s early sketches, letters and typographies, graphic art, textiles, furniture and other paraphernalia, visual poems, film and a final installation surprise. This is a complete experience of Mariscal’s work.

So where does the opinion changing come in? Well, I had no idea that the artist’s work was so diverse. I thought it was just drawings, some paintings and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics mascot: Cobi. Mariscal has worked with so many different formats and mediums. Comics and sculptures, furniture and homewares, typographies and branding, to name just a few. I was especially taken with his prints for textiles. His scribbly work translates really well to cloth and I would love to have a dress made from one of his designs.

I remember that you could get Cobi merchandising with practically anything you bought during the summer of ’92 in Barcelona. At McDonalds, in cereal boxes, crisp packets, it was absolute madness. The exhibition clearly portrays all the different areas that Marsical has tried his hand at. With his Chico & Rita film, Mariscal’s drawings have jumped to the big screen. The expo finishes with a surprise installation that I won’t say anything about. Although Mariscal is never going to be one of my favourite artists, I have found a new respect growing inside me and really actually love the prints for cloth. I’ve now seen more of his work, seen him play the drums and this Friday at Broad.cat 2010, I will get to see him introduce Arnold Schwartzman.
