“In my artistic footwear design, the shoe is my canvas”. Sage words from Kobi Levi, the designer behind the best shoes that have appeared in a long while. Levi develops his concepts and turns them into gorgeous footwear. From the mundane to the extraordinary, everything is valid in his work.
Kobi Levi graduated in 2001 from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, located in Jerusalem. Fitting really, as his designs are the closest I can manage to a religious experience. He describes his creative process as being a hybrid between an image that pops into his head and the concept of the shoe. Wearable sculptures.
No object misses his attention, each and every one is reworked into one of his delicious shoes. Humorous with a critical point of view, Levi’s shoes work two ways: as an indispensable item to include in one’s wardrobe and also as extreme mini-pieces of art. It almost seems a shame to place feet inside the heels and possibly dirty them in the street.
All of his shoes are handmade in his studio, making each utterly unique. What else will Levi think of? From animals such as dogs and cats, rocking chairs to shopping trolleys, banana peels and school-boy sling-shots, and my personal favourite, the chewing gum heel. When are you going to open an online store, Kobi? Absolutely gorgeous and breath-taking.
