Fallen Princesses by Dina Goldstein

What would have happened if our long-ago, fairytale princesses were brought bang up to date in our 9 to 21, technological world? Would they survive? Would they adapt? It seems that even princesses would have a hard time today.

Rapunzel by Dina Goldstein

The photographer Dina Goldstein presents Fallen Princesses, a study of exactly what these women would be going through nowadays. The happy endings are replaced with common situations and the girls are face issues that current women deal with all the time. Snow White is overwhelmed with a lazy husband and too many kids. Sleeping Beauty is still asleep and her prince is old and residing in an old folks’ home. Rapunzel’s hair has succumbed to chemotherapy.

Not so Little Red Riding Hood by Dina Goldstein

The Princess, her mattresses and pea have been put out in the dump, in other words, women with specific needs take heed, we are not going to be indulged anymore. Pocahontas lives surrounded by animals and probably has a hard time paying the rent. And Little Red Riding Hood? She’s on the way to obesity or an eating disorder. Each of the photos is a critical study of the afflictions that the modern woman has to deal with. Some issues we take for granted, yet seeing our childhood heroines is shocking.

Belle by Dina Goldstein

Jazmin is some sort of Middle Eastern guerilla warrior. No flying carpets in sight. Cinderella is getting drunk, alone, in a shitty bar. No prince anywhere. And since beauty is not forever, Belle herself is undergoing some serious cosmetic surgery. Each one of the photographs has a story to tell, just like the original tales. False hopes and starry-eyed nonsense has flown the coop, leaving stark reality in their place.

i absolutely love these, great job. what an interesting idea & so cleverly done as well. Really great commentary on our preconceived notions of happiness in femininity as well as today’s society, and the clash of the two ideals. thanks for sharing!
