There seems to be a growing trend for beautiful, dark and moody china which adds a touch of simmering strangeness to the table. I can’t stand eating from boring, white plates or repetitious Ikea plates. I also get an awful turn of stomach from matching plates. So it’s a relief to find that a few small companies are slowly churning out some different options.
El Ajuar de Maria is a small venture based here in Spain. During my last visit to Madrid, I came across these gorgeous plates at the Laie shop in Caixaforúm Madrid. The plate above is the one I took home. Insects crawl around the rims of the plates, there is the beginning of a story scrawled with a creepy hand and the most perfect Japanese cat.
There are plates and mugs and each collection is accompanied by a name that evokes dark fairytales and wonder. Fábula – Fable. Metamorphosis. Weird animals often appear, a mixture of Grimm tales and Beatrix Potter characters that have gone slightly off. Having grown up believing that animals can talk and Narnia is just one more wardrobe away, these plates fuel my imagination and are the perfect companion to my meals.
The Vintage Collection is brought bang up to date, the perfect union of historical characters and rococo motifs. Channeling that old and used look, some of the design seems to have rubbed off, just like an antique plate that has been washed time and time again. With a subtle wink and a quick laugh at the snobbery of heritage and family heirlooms, these dishes literally break the mold of stodgy “antiques”.
Both the Cool Route and Cult Route collections depict the most important things to see in various cities such as Barcelona, Madrid or London. Acting as veritable guide books, or in this case, guide plates, this is the perfect souvenir. I’m pretty sure these plates were part of the Souvenir Effect exhibition some time back at the DHUB.
Mealtime is no longer boring with El Ajuar de María on your table. I can’t wait to see what else they come up with and get my hands on more dishes.
