This past weekend saw the first edition of Mercat de Mercats. The weather was perfect, the market was crowded, which for some, may have presented a problem. This is when Barcelona really comes into its’ own, almost magically pulling together a great food event that revelled in culinary celebration.
The market was divided into several sections:
1 – Restaurants each serving a special tapa.
2 – Olive oils, with little pieces of bread to dip into the different oils.
3 – Cavas, which could be tasted.
4 – Stalls representing the best of the different markets located in the various Barcelona neighborhoods.
5 – Pagés produce, products direct from farms.
6 – Ecological and organic products.
7 – Children’s activities tent.
8 – Culinary demonstrations and workshop tent.
9 – Sommelier seminar and workshop tent.
Each of the stalls was put together with care, optimizing the small spaces with the maximum amount of produce possible. Little pots of plants and herbs decorated the spaces and the smells were absolutely intoxicating.
This was a food-lover’s dream, a haven of sight, taste and smells. The clash of colour, the noisy crowds, the lovely tapas, absolutely mouth-watering. Hopefully this won’t be a once-a-year event. The Mercat de Mercats should be held 4 times a year to better grasp and understand the different foods that each season of the year has to offer.
