Broad.cat Dual 3

What to expect when mixing a cool venue, a bunch of audiovisual fanatics, quite a lot of beer and two talks from two different studios? Just the best edition of Broad.cat Dual so far. Still practically in diapers, the Dual event just goes from strength to strength and gathering from the reactions, both during and post, the public got exactly what they wanted: an entertaining and inspiring evening.

Broad.cat Dual is the little brother of the main Broad.cat event that is held in November. As the main event is heading towards its sixth edition, the “mini” Dual sessions now stand at a total of three, all held during 2010. The concept behind these small gatherings is to present an emerging talent and then to have a consolidated team share their thoughts on their various experiences. Shying away from the old and tired method of simply presenting the studio reel, each talk is in interview format and the public is invited to interrupt, question, provoke, in other words, to get some good ol’ dialogue flowing.

After editions at BAU and Elisava, this time it was Miscelanea’s turn to lend their space. All seats occupied, people squished into the back where it was standing room only, leaving many more outside. Around 80 to 90 people were crowded into the room, expectantly waiting to hear Home de Caramel and United Fakes.

First in line were Jordi and Oriol, two of the three parts of Home de Caramel. One thing that all the emerging talents have in common is their sweet shyness. Quiet voices accompanied by brief moments of actually looking out at the public. These two were no exception but the difference was the scope of their work and their obvious potential, all coupled with lashings of more than coherent thinking and opinions. Adrián Rodríguez, content editor of Broad.cat, was the person in charge of directing the interview and he did such a good job like always. It’s been awhile since the last time I looked at web and/or blog and immediately had a smile spread across my face. Showing a penchant for cartoons, there is a quiet sense of humour to their pieces.

They had several bits of wisdom to share which seemed almost astonishing coming from such “young” creatives. Human beings tend to think way too much about an idea or concept, wasting precious time and then finding there’s not enough time to actually get the idea/concept carried out. This little gem can be applied to all areas of life, not only to one’s professional life.

The second idea goes along the lines that simple can be extraordinary and that even a even a brilliant idea can have poor results. So less thinking and more creative process in other words.

After a brief pause for everyone to grab another beer, it was time to hear United Fakes. This was hands-down one of the best talks I have ever had the pleasure to sit through. Entertaining, funny, inspiring and a whole slew more of positive adjectives.

United Fakes

This was the photo that they put together especially for Broad.cat Dual. The guys all had mustaches before they took the photo, they all decided to take the plunge and shave for the photo. Something that was not necessary, but they decided to go one step further, to take the plunge and that sums up the way in which they work.

Titled “Handicraft for a Digital World”, Albert and Ana overwhelmed with their charm, with their positive attitude, not only towards their projects but towards life in general. United Fakes has a mission and that is to tell stories through the pieces they create. They shared their beginnings, when they had to go back to their roots, scrabble through the clichés and theories, start over to really begin, to sweat out their stories. Reality will always offer more, reality is infinite, yet reality makes a project come to an end. Digital work can be continually be reworked and corrected. Reality offers the unpredictable, those little things that could be errors but can magically take a project in a different direction.

Theirs is a dialogue with infinite nuances, a continual surprise of overcoming obstacles. Citing a certain coldness in digital work, they cut and craft their pieces, creating the unthinkable from childhood basics. Obviously they have to add digital work into their pieces and that’s where their curiosity strikes: where does the limit between analog and digital disappear, where does the line begin to blur?

Life can’t be repeated, you can’t press replay. We live in constant fear of randomness, fearing the risks, scared of the mistakes. Yet here are United Fakes, embracing all the possibilities that their experiments offer.

I’ve been dragged to a good many conferences and events over the course of almost three years and yesterday I got something back. I don’t know much about all the audiovisual stuff, but I want to thank United Fakes for giving me back something that I’d been missing for a few months which is love and energy, that magical ability to be enthralled by beauty in simple things, to believe in castles in the sky and to take the different route when faced with new obstacles.
