In a make-believe land far, far away, where books flow in a stream like water, a magician of stellar images works at building secret moments that are thought-provoking, warm and imaginative.

Rune Guneriussen, a Norwegian photographer, takes inanimate objects, sets them in outdoor locations and infuses them with life. The results are absolutely stunning, similar to animal documentary photos in National Geographic. Anything is possible in these photos, brimming with tense or magical moments.

Small bedside lamps that seem to be growing straight out of the trees, a silent snow-filled landscape. It’s almost possible to hear the lamps humming as they “grow”. Or the vintage lamps that are most purposefully on their way somewhere, a quiet procession, winding their way through the forest. Maybe going to a secret party.

Rune’s telephone series is one of my favourites, completely spine-chilling and eerie. An army of rotary dial phones carrying out secret missions, following their leader and listening intently for instructions. A reflection of the present day trend to follow as sheep, even though this may lead us into uncertain and dangerous waters. A study of mass culture, of brain-washed group thinking, where the individual is slowly being erased.

Yet in among the phone series, there are these fleeting moments, where rituals are performed, a mating dance of sorts. The call of the wild. So many thoughts and emotions flit around my mind when seeing these beautiful images.

So recognizable and so linked to Pixar, the original Luxo lamps are searching for something among the grass. It is almost possible to see them hop around, while they squeak and creak.

Guneriussen’s photos are a welcome escape to a place where things are quite different from what we are accustomed to. A land where anything is possible and the objects are just as alive or even more than us humans.
