S/S 2011 at 080 Barcelona Fashion

Once again, it is fashion week here in Barcelona and at a strange time of the year. During a period that is usually reserved for pre-collection and cruise collection shows internationally, the city has decided to stage the spring – summer 2011 edition of 080 Barcelona Fashion.

Inaugurated in 2007, 080 Barcelona Fashion is celebrating its 6th edition and, suspiciously, quite a few months before the usual date in Octobre. Considering that the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Action Plan for Catalan Fashion spans a period from 2007 to 2010, I hope this scramble to celebrate Barcelona’s Fashion Week does not auger bad news…

On a more upbeat note, Miriam Ponsa, winner of 080′s last edition, opened the catwalk proceedings with her new spring/summer collection for 2011, titled “Espantaocells” – Scarecrows.

Even more lovely than her past winter collection, Ponsa played with fabrics and colours reminiscent of the earth and nature. Key elements were incorporated into the designs to bring the scarecrow concept virtually to life. Broom heads, flowered twigs, twig cages placed over the face and farming implements underscored the link with nature. Almost all the fabrics were natural, either cotton or silk mixes, with thread created from latex and coloured elastic strips knitted by hand. The dye patterns were beautiful and added depth to simple pieces such as white t-shirts.

Not one to pay much attention to music, (I’m much more of a visual person), I have to admit that the music during Miriam’s show was lovely. The sound of ping-pong balls mixed and blended between songs. A rousing, classical rendition of Britney Spears’ Toxic which was a definite improvement on the original version.

Next in line was Josep Abril. Austere in his tailoring, some of the colours were eye-poppingly bright. Jon Kortajarena opened the show and the entire collection was accompanied by live music by the hand of two  musicians. Slicked back hair and a few womens’ pieces completed the looks.

Titled “Luxury”, this was a study in contradictions: summer versus winter, light versus heavy, past versus future. Cool wools, cottons and linens are the fabrics that Abril uses to confection each of his different pieces.

The afternoon continued with shows by Montse Liarte, Juan Antonio Ávalos, Cardona Bonache and Manish Arora. One of the highlights was seeing Bimba Bosé inaugurate the Yo Dona exhibition, Portraits of an Obsession.
