Quite a crowd gathered yesterday evening for the inauguration of the new DHUB exhibition, Fabrication Laboratory. Although I am not very technologically-inclined, this show is a sight to behold. The really great thing about attending inaugural events is the possibility to take photographs.
New scenarios for 3D design and production is the subject matter of the Fabrication Laboratory. Not merely an exhibition, there will be a series of live fabrication labs, workshops and lectures. The idea is to offer an overview of the innovative 3D technologies, (in other words, 3D is not just for movies), which are under constant development. Each new breakthrough extends fantastic opportunities to design professionals and moves the curiosity of the general public.
3D printing has existed for some time now, yet is not fully incorporated into everyday life. The endless possibilities that this new manner of printing offers and the ever-growing software that generate objects makes for a mind-boggling concept.
From furniture to sports items, prosthetics to jewelery, there are both creative elements to the new procedures and technologies and very useful applications. This show is like taking a peak into the future.
Part of the extreme fascination of the exhibit comes in the form of the DHUB FABLAB, a digital fabrication workshop, stocked with CNC machinery, where it will be possible to experiment with prototypes and object manufacturing. CNC cutting and milling, 3D scanning, electronic circuits, all this and more will have more than one techie going absolute mad with glee.
These spectacular heels, obviously my favourite part of the collection, are absolutely lust worthy. Aptly named “Head over Heels”, that was exactly how I felt. But not only about the shoes, in general I felt that I was completely out of my depth in terms of lack of knowledge in what goes on in the technological world. As soon as I can, I’ll be going back for a second visit, hopefully with less people, so as to try and get a grasp on the fantastic innovations sitting at the DHUB.
