As fate would have it, there seems to be an overbooking of events and activities this week in Barcelona. There are only two options: spread oneself very thinly over the course of the week or try to make the terrible decision to miss out on a few of the offerings.
Tuesday, in other words, tomorrow at the DHUB in Borne, a new exhibition is being inaugurated. Fabrication Laboratory consists in an exhibit plus a slew of activities, all focused in discovering recent developments in 3D technological processes. The Fablab Open Production will be a space accompanying the show in which small workshops will be held. Expect an upcoming post this week.
From Wednesday onwards it’s complete madness and absolutely impossible to visit all the lovely proposals. The photographer Joan Fontcuberta will be giving a chat at the Picasso Museum starting at 19:30. After seeing so many of his exhibitions, this is bound to be inspiring.
As part of the International Day of the Entrepeneur, Volume 9 of Pecha Kucha Barcelona, the second of 2010, will be held at 20:00 near the MNAC. Celebrated in different cities around the world, the idea was brainstormed by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, who started with the first event during 2003. The Barcelona edition began in 2008 and has been quite a success. A series of different speakers are allowed to show 20 images for 20 seconds each, making every lecture around 6 minutes and 40 seconds. Brief and to-the-point, this is a great way for new presenters to showcase their work.
For Star Wars fans, also at 20:00, there will be a cabaret-style improv comedy based on the original trilogy. Held at the Teatre Riereta, it is raising much curiosity and the best thing yet… it’s in English. I am completely torn and have still not decided on which to attend come this Wednesday.
The eponymous vintage store, Paris Vintage, has recently moved to a new location. They are inviting people to preview the new surroundings and collection of vintage pieces while having a little cocktail party to celebrate. Starting at 19:00 this Thursday, there is just enough time to pop round before setting off for the next proposal.
To celebrate 30 years of Modafad, they have put together a catwalk show with many of the designers that have sent their collections down the runway over the years. Many of these designers are now fully consolidated and enjoying interesting careers. Submodafad will be held at 21:00 this Thursday inside the transport hallway connecting the green and blue lines at the subway stop Diagonal.
It’s that time of the year when the Grec Festival rolls around and this years’ guest country is Japan. With an almost endless programme of theatre, music, dance and other cultural activities, Spectra is one certainly not to be missed. 64 powerful lights will be directed up into the sky, on Montjuïc. This sculpture, made entirely of light, will be visible from practically all the higher points of the city. The public will be able to walk among the lights, becoming part of the installation. I’ll also have a post on Spectra some time during the week.
Which brings us to the events that start this Thursday and continue all weekend. The infamous Sónar begins with a packed programme of musical offerings.
Sala Apolo’s Versus, the counter-attack on Sónar, will also start this Thursday, turning Barcelona into quite the happening musical city.
For those less music-inclined, Saturday and Sunday will see a new edition of La Festivalet. The oh-so-cute gathering of designers that make handcrafted goods will be held at Duduà’s new location. I’m definitely not missing out, as Jenny and her luscious I Love Muffins will be there.
No excuses for staying in this week, the crisis not even being an issue with these economical events, (apart from Sónar, of course).
