It was about time that someone realized the need for cupcakes here in Barcelona had become epic and corrected said situation by opening a place to indulge all those crazed sweet tooths. Cup&Cake is the city’s first boutique cupcake shop to cater almost specifically to these sweet confections.
Blending a chic, French je ne sais quoi with sleek Scandinavian design and hints of vintage, Cup&Cake Barcelona is an absolute haven. Near Diagonal, specifically Enrique Granados 145, the only problem will be finding enough excuses to go all the way up there and fighting off the posh moms who lunch.
For those that may find a cupcake to be slightly on the too sugary side, there is luscious bread cut in huge chunks. There are several toasters arrayed on the tables so that one can toast away to their particular liking. The jams are French and bordering on the insanely delicious. There are also croissants and more conventional pastries.
The coffee is sumptuous, the atmosphere is tranquil, the interior design hits the perfect harmonious note so as not to distract from the cupcake tasting. I found the shop a bit too tiny and there are still no special prices for taking home half a dozen or a dozen cupcakes, unfortunately.
And the cupcakes themselves? Mind-numbingly sweet, oh-so-freshly baked, melt in your mouth icing. Time stopped, conversations dropped away, the hair on my arms stood up to attention. I’ll leave the trekking to India to find nirvana to other people. My route points to Diagonal and the goodies that there await.
