Body – XXI BAU Student Show

desfile bau 2010

It’s that time of year when the student shows roll around, you can smell the exhaustion and stress in the air. A huge, gigantic, enormous world away from the talents rolled out each year at prestigious fashion colleges such as Central Saint Martins in London, Barcelona does manage to churn out a few interesting students.

Bau was the first in line this year, with their 21st edition student catwalk show titled Body, held yesterday at Razzmatazz. Students shows always have their pros and cons and this was no exception. Razzmatazz is a little off the beaten track and not exactly the hippest joint in town anymore. Once inside, the amount of hormone-frenzied teenagers, slews of “modernitos” and practically standing room only, is just the right blend to set one’s teeth on edge. That is, until the moment that the show begins and ear drums everywhere are shattered due to the blatant wolf whistles.

The evening started with Nara’s collection. A jumble of references and a lot of teenage angst going on. Kudos to the hair and makeup.

Maria Giralt

This was without a doubt, the best collection of the night. Maria Giralt created perfect pieces that wrapped parts of the body and contorted other proportions. Exaggerated details and volumes, a luscious colour palette, clothes to be lusted over. She demonstrated a clear talent, sensitivity, grace and maturity.

Cris y Blanca presented a wispy collection of party clothes, loosely based on recent styles seen at Versus and Christopher Kane.

It became clear very quickly that the school had not invested in professional models. A weird and wonderful hybrid blend of friends, students and others tried their best to strut down the catwalk but with little success. Such a pity, as it was impossible to fully appreciate the clothes under these conditions.

The evening wore on and it appeared that around 75% of the students had agreed to create some version or other of apocalyptic post grunge/punk with touches of homeless or space-age, take your pick.

Ohiana Garaluce

At least Ohiana’s creations spiced the evening up. If ever there is a remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, I believe these pieces would be well suited. Just the right amount of goth, richly blended with freak show elements and glamour. The hair dress on the left is positively, spine-tinglingly horrific, but in a good way. It seemed to growth and become alive as the model moved down the catwalk.

These are just a few of the new designers from last night’s show. They now have to face the real world after living in the bubble that is fashion school.
