Venice is surrounded by a myriad of islands that are relatively easy to visit. Jetting around in a boat is always relaxing and the results are absolutely stunning. Burano, which is an hour from Venice, is a lush mix of rainbow-coloured houses. Time slows down, there is an air of tranquility and the air is filled with the smell of clean laundry.
Each house is painted a different colour and the combinations are absolutely intoxicating. Bright blues, to flashy purples and lilacs, juicy oranges to pastel lemon, the entire town makes your mouth water.
Umbrellas are hung at every door, wellingtons are out on the stoop, laundry hangs from practically every window or strung up directly at street level. Flowers and plants decorate every imaginable corner.
This is hands down one of the safest, peaceful, chicest, most colourful towns I have ever had the luck to set foot in. Burano is renowned for it’s lace creations and the handful of shops offer up all sorts of mind-boggling creations.
There are fewer canals yet the water continues with it’s sea-green, foamy aspect. Boats and dogs line the waterways, old folk sit out on benches and time floats by languidly. Absolute paradise!
