Imatges de Moda. Galeria d’ Estudi at DHUB

Great things come in small doses and/or packages. Finally, all things fashion are looking up here in Barcelona. The DHUB in Borne has once again turned it’s hand to another fashion exhibition.

Continuing along the lines of the Fashion Images initiative which was launched this past January with DHUB’s Outumuro Looks, Imatges de Moda. Galeria d’Estudi is a concise research study on the diverse visual fashion formats that have existed since the 16th century up to the present day. I was able to get a sneak peak at the inauguration this past Thursday.

The first thing one sees when stepping into the exhibition area is a glass display case with various dolls depicting different styles of dresses referencing several centuries. The dolls are eerie to say the least and it was great fun to hear the different comments of the public. Why is there always a love/hate relationship with dolls? Some people loved them, others were seriously freaked. There must be a deep connection with childhood memories which linger in the collective mind.

Since dolls don’t have much effect on me either way, I was able to concentrate on the exquisite textile and embroidery details. I found the display to be significantly arresting, a combination of metal grids and glass. A cage-like structure which hints at the “prison” that fashion can become if one is obsessed. Similarly, the glass window display brings to mind that fashion and clothing, trends and the basic need to cover our bodies turn many of us into a veritable, walking showcase.

Photography played a very important part in bringing fashion to a wider audience. Magazines and store catalogs appeared, pages upon pages of glorious images to pour over. The exhibition includes a careful selection of what we now term vintage magazines and catalogs.

With the advent of television and catwalk shows, fashion was able to reach more corners of the globe. Which has then exploded into complete coverage of every single fashion moment in our present technological era of internet, live-streaming, blogs, etc. There are several screens in the middle section of the exhibition depicting runway shows, television programs, interviews, webs and blogs.

Fashion has completely changed from its’ primitive beginnings and is it quite mind-boggling to see how quickly things have been updated, especially in the last 100 or so years. I strongly recommend that all those fashion students out there in Barcelona visit the Galeria d’Estudi. I would have loved to seen all this material when I myself was studying fashion.
