Primavera Sound 2010

Today, the much awaited press conference for Primavera Sound 2010 was held. I’m afraid that I didn’t pay too much attention to the bands that will be participating in this year’s edition. Music is definitely not my strong point. I wasn’t interested in the blah, blah, blah; it was the venue that had been chosen that especially peaked my curiosity. The Real Academia de Medicina de Catalunya, (Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalunya), was the chosen space for the unveiling of this music festival’s 2010 line-up. And what a place!

The chosen room was previously used as a viewing hall during autopsies. A perfectly circular space, with seating running along the circumference. Soaring ceilings and beautiful architecture, an enormous chandelier and stained glass windows.

It was practically impossible to concentrate on what was being said. Didn’t help much that considering that most of the band names are in English, well, let’s just say they get mangled in Spanish. The center of the room was dominated by a marble operating table with a drain in the middle. It sent shivers down my spine. The entire set-up was absolutely breath-taking. I closed my eyes and imagined the students sitting around on the plush velvet cushions, writing notes as a body was dissected before their very eyes.

It was such a great experience to be able to see this hidden gem in Barcelona. It is completely awe-inspiring and unsettling. How many other places must there be behind closed doors?…
