El Santa Restaurant

I recently had dinner at the restaurant Santa Maria in Borne and was looking forward to trying out Paco Guzman’s other venture, El Santa near Parque de la Ciudadella. They have several lunch menu options, ranging from the full menu including three set starters, a main dish, dessert and drink to a one dish and dessert menu. I find this to be a very positive aspect, as you’re not obligated to eat a vast amount of food at lunch which just leads to wanting a siesta.

modern furniture in el santa restaurante, barcelona

I have to admit that this type of interior irritates the hell out of me. I find this whole minimalist, modern take that is so popular here in Barcelona to be completely uninspiring when eating delicious food. When did everyone make a secret agreement that interiors should not interfere with the dishes? I find it to be very cold and impersonal. That said, the food was absolutely mouth-watering and scrumptious.

The starters were brought on a metallic tray and are different every day. This was miso soup, a salad with sliced courgette, cauliflower and fresh cheese and a little dish of polenta with a dry tomato and olive tapinade. Every thing was quite delicious, but it was the main dishes that really hit the mark.

lechon con patatas

This was suckling pig with yakiniku sauce and potatoes. The meat was crisp and oh-so-tasty, the sauce had a touch of balsamic vinegar which was a lovely combination with the green asparagus and oven-baked potatoes. Unfortunately, dessert was a bit of a let down.

I much prefer El Santa Maria en Borne. The décor, the food, the general feeling, everything is petite and well-looked after. El Santa is very good for lunch, but it didn’t check all the right boxes unfortunately.
