Cubexperience by Josep Abril

What to expect from a fashion collection based on a car? Yesterday it was possible to find out at the Roca Barcelona Gallery, renown for its’ audiovisual marvels. Given that I’m not all that much into cars, I was really intrigued to see the end result. Josep Abril was the designer in charge of translating the clean, stylized lines of Nissan’s Cube Car into a more wearable idea. Nissan’s industrial engineer was also on hand to explain part of the technological processes.

The first surprise of the evening was the seating arrangement. Cardboard seats had been placed all around the gallery. They looked very nice, but unfortunately felt quite precarious and were slightly uncomfortable. No worries, I managed to bag one of the best seats available and had the great honour of being accompanied by photographer Inés of Happinés, who “oh-so-kindly”, snapped all the photos I needed.

The show began with haunting violins, music by Xumo for Central Art Process. The next and absolutely lovely surprise was to see Blanca Romero open the runway. A blindingly white ensemble of jacket over dress, it was immediately clear to envision the Cube references.

Her jewels throughout the show were Marc Monzó and her shoes by Dorotea. Josep Abril’s Evolution collection was menswear excepting the three looks that he created specifically for Blanca.

The colour palette did not stray from snowy whites, creams, icy greys, midnight blacks and beige. The overall feel was a of a very well pulled-together collection. Cool wools, parachute-like flow, whisper-thin plastic jackets and coats. I’m not usually all that impressed by menswears’ creations, but this was different. Blanca made her stellar appearance once again towards the half-point of the show. It is such an inspiration to see a model that totally dominates herself and the catwalk.

The show ended with a billowing black dress showcased by Blanca, the models paraded down the runway and a beaming and very “the cat got the cream” Josep Abril posed beside the cuboid car.

I love seeing that special complicity between designer and model, it seems like such a private moment. This was a great event, the clothes and ambient were luscious. It was curious to see the athlete, Josef Ajram, walk down the runway. he seemed very self-conscious. I would like to thank Inés for sharing this great experience with me and also to David Rodenas of Bloguzz for inviting me. Thanks so much!
