Outumuro Looks at DHUB

Fashion photographer Manuel Outumuro has just inaugurated a new exhibit this past Friday at the DHUB in Borne. It’s always terribly exciting when a fashion exhibition finally rears its’ head here in Barcelona, as that just does not happen all that often. So off I went this past Sunday to view Outumuro’s images.

The DHUB is another museum which I consider to be very saavy when putting together shows. Just the right amount of space, great neighbourhood and excellent production teams. The walls have all been painted a rich palette of mouth-watering, solid colours. Deep purple, dirty turquoise blue, rich burgundy all complement Outumuro’s photos. The restropective is split into six different areas: Surroundings (where the locations take on more importance than the clothes), Portraits (not much mystery there), Black and White (beautiful room shaped like an eye with an actual pupil sofa), Sequences (images based on films, both reworkings and literal), Poses and Attitudes (shots that are directly fashion-oriented) and Celebrities (a smattering of models, actresses, etc). Mirrored passages lead from area to area, reflecting the colours and photographs, bestowing depth to the supportive spaces.

A collection of around 200 photos, with a special book to be able to savour the memory, time and time again. But this is where the problems start… Outumuro has some really great work, has shot incredible amounts of fantastic fashion editorials, yet the exhibit is bland. Of course there are some great photos that really stand out, but the general impression is very watered-down. I found it to be a complete disappointment, especially since I was looking forward to it so much. There was only one photo which I thought was really impressive considering other things I have seen by him, which is the one below.

I’ll just have to wait for the next fashion exhibit to roll around and I’ll just cross my fingers that this is not an advance warning of what it is store this week at Barcelona’s various fashion events: 080, The Brandery and Modafad
