Barcelona bids adieu to the Kupka exhibit at Fundación Joan Miró. For those of you who didn’t have a chance to see his paintings, I’m afraid to say, you really missed out. The Fundación’s exhibit space is one of my favourites, well-organized and concise. The beautiful Montjüic surroundings are also a big plus.
The manner in which Kupka works with colour is absolutely mesmerizing. A careful selection of the painter’s artwork was pulled together showcasing the different phases that the artist went through to finally settle into his very recognizable style. Some may argue that it is difficult to truly represent certain elements through abstract art, yet Kupka manages to capture such intangibles as movement or music. His representations of jazz melodies can practically be heard. His paintings of machinery seem to take on a life of their own and silently move to an unseen force.
Depth is achieved through layers and tones of colour, making each of the paintings appear to spring out on different levels or thunder inwards, drawing one in, pooling the imagination in a landscape of circles and curves. Very dramatic especially considering the fact that really great exhibits are few and far between in Barcelona…
