Considering the fact that hippy crafts practically give me heart burn, this year’s Drapart market was a bit of a disappointment. The 2008 edition had a broader spectrum of objects made out of recycled material, which were interesting and appealing. Thank goodness for the spectacular exhibit that is the heart of the event.
It will be possible to visit the exhibition up until the 10th of January at the CCCB and is it well-worth dropping by to view the various visions of artists and their recycled art. Some pieces are extraordinary, others confusing and some are absolutely breathtaking.
Car parts melded into sofas and chairs, bits and pieces curved into mobiles and orange peels galore all inhabit and jostle for space. Here are a few of my favourite pieces.
A self-portrait of one of the artists, this devilish head was created entirely from pieces of kitsch ceramic, glass figurines and souvenirs. The head itself is impressive and the attention to detail is exquisite.
Lusesita has a collection of 12 plates installed. Each more beautiful than the other, she creates quirky dreams and surreal items such as teacups with little hands and legs. I would absolutely love, love, love to have one of her pieces.
This was my hands-down favourite. I got goose bumps and tears sprang to my eyes at the sheer implications of this delicate and moving piece by Sophia Daly Rossin. How to express in words, my complete intoxication with this work of art… From two old books flew a majestic number of origami birds up to a broken window. Each bird constructed from a printed page. A glorious manner to demonstrate how books come alive; each time a book is read, it continues in time, flying to new owners, saturating our minds, passed along from consciousness to consciousness. The lighting offers a play of shadows that is indescribable and it is best viewed from various angles. This is visual poetry at its best and what better means than a book which hides so many secrets.
