This past weekend I went to see Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. I was expecting a good movie, but it is definitely a great, excellent, charming movie. One that makes you a better person when you leave the cinema. The beauty of the filming is magnificent, the story is enchanting, making you wish that the world were a better, more understanding place.

Quirky and intelligent details, sumptuous clothing and a dream-like quality infuse every moment of the film. The costumes have been designed by Monique Prudhomme. I had my doubts about Lily Cole, as the model turned actress doesn’t always yield the best results. She is disarmingly good, with the cutest accent. Her clothes are stunning throughout the entire film, a cross between fairy-princess and dirty gypsy girl.

The story unfolds in a harmonious manner and the characters are richly portrayed. This is the first time I’ve thought it was a pity that Heath Ledger is no longer among us, as he is crucial to the tale and quite magnificent. Considering the fact that he died half-way through filming, the issue was resolved in an ingenious manner, by bringing in other actors to portray his part: Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Johnny Depp are the three in charge of portraying the different “facades” of Heath.

To accompany the magic, there is a healthy dose of romance, midgets, bets, morales, action and a few drunks along the way. I usually have a bit of a problem sitting still during an entire film, but Gilliam’s Imaginarium just flew by. The hard part is going back to normal life, dealing with day-to-day issues. It is a great film to escape from reality. I can’t say much more, so as not to ruin the story, my best advice and I greatly stress this point,  is to go and see it.

    Terry Gilliam is great!!!!!

IMPERDONABLE!!!!!
