Starting Monday 2nd and continuing to the 7th of November, the annual illustrated book festival, Como Pedro Por Mi Casa, is being held at La Central in the Raval neighbourhood. (I can’t think of any translated saying equivalent for this in English). The event is organized by Julia Pelletier and is celebrating it’s 4th edition.

This is a festival devoted exclusively to illustrated books for adults and authors sharing an idea of freedom in painting, drawing or illustration to express their ideas. The originality of the event resides in bringing together work using an array of techniques to construct a narration.

The book is a subject open to a wide range of interpretations, be it fanzine, object book, graphic novel or even an eatable or flying book.

During six days, there will be books from countries as far as Mexico, Japan, Switzerland, England and Australia, which will serve to open people’s eyes to a variety of new techniques and stories from around the world. In the cosy basement space of La Central, people come and take time to peruse at their own leisure the books that are on offer.
The festival was born from the desire to share Julia’s curiosity and celebrate work which expresses life and stories in a different way, outside the norm. Every year a specific country is invited, this time around the focus is on Iran.

This is art contained between the covers of books. Delicate, perfectionist, exquisite books, to be handled with care. It is necessary to wear special gloves which are provided so as not to leave fingerprints on the fragile, thin pages. Love and care has been put into each tome, with very limited quantities being produced; some are completely unique, no other examples existing in the world. There is a deep calm and respect in the air, that same sensation that one feels at a museum. With an undercurrent of excitement when one finds a treasure to take home. The thrill of feeling the paper at home, tracing the illustrations with one’s fingertips, now free from the protective gloves. It’s interesting that in the times we’re living in, were technology and a fast-way-of-life seems to be the only acceptable route to follow, that there still exists artists willing to employ so much of their time and people that are searching for these masterpieces. I find that really comforting.
