This week’s Timeout focuses on the Poble Sec neighbourhood, its’ various restaurants, bars, shops and secret places. Unfortunately, they didn’t include one of the best places, Bar Seco. Located at Passeig Montjuic 74, this is an oasis of calm, on the slopes leading up to Montjuic. Do not be put off by its’ “bar de barrio” outside appearance. It has a small terrace of 4 tables which are almost always full and a lovely space inside.

Be prepared to spend awhile, time seems to stop in this quirky, magical corner. Relaxed and informal, this is the place to while away an entire afternoon with friends or with a good book. The prices range from easy on the pocket to a tad steep on more elaborated dishes, the difference being that all the food on offer is absolutely delicious. Many of the options are organic or ecological, with a daily rotation of special dishes.

Careful attention to detail and voluminous portions make for an excellent eating experiences. Like always, I won’t take a final decision until I have tasted the desserts and Bar Seco is absolutely brilliant when it comes to the moment of sweet indulgences.

The chocolate cake was properly decadent, with big chunks of real chocolate, mixed in with slices of pear. The apple cake was also lovely and crumbly. This is a place to sit for awhile and dream, the lack of stress, movement and loud noise are exceptional. I’ll be going back soon, but this time in the evening, since it seems that night time drinks and dishes are even better!
