Encants Vells – Barcelona’s Flea Market

Disorganized, smelly, filled with people, when visiting the Encants Vells flea market, (Old Charms), patience is a must. The market is held every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, just off the Glorias round-about. It’s best to go during the week and very early, around 9:00 in the morning. Saturday is chaotic. Preparation is a must, bring coins, as bartering is allowed. There’s no point in bartering down a price and then handing over a 20 euro note. The sellers are pretty tolerant with taking photos, but precaution must be taken with cameras, bags, purses and other belongings. The best option is stuff everything in pockets.

Urtain

Animalario is a theatre company based in Madrid, so all their plays are in Spanish. Urtain was a mediocre boxer towards the later years of Franco’s regime. Due to many events that were greatly followed and talked about, Urtain managed to achieve great fame and became the image of Spain. After many years of fighting his greatest battles with himself, he commited suicide fours days before the beginning of the Barcelona Olympics. A tragic figure, Animalario brings Urtain to life once again, through Roberto Álamo. This is a journey through a Spain marked by blood, politics, lies and deceit, fame and destruction. It is also a journey through the tortured and chaotic mind of Urtain.
