Behind the facade of a dry cleaners’ is Barcelona’s newest secret restaurant. Tintoreria Dontell hides a nouvelle cuisine eaterie waiting to be discovered. A play on words, Dontell converts to Don’t Tell. The dry cleaners’ looks licit: washing machines tumbling, clothes hanging on rails, plastic clothes’ bags. Once inside, a modern space opens up, for dining and drinking.

The exciting bit is the “secret restaurant” element. Once inside, it is pretty much cookie-cutter modern nouvelle cuisine that has popped up everywhere around Barcelona in the past few years. Dark wallpaper, leather seats, metal and wood furnishing, strange plants and lamps, in other words, not very warm and welcoming. This is a place to dress up and pose. The quality – price ratio is relatively acceptable, the cheapest tasting menu is around 40 euros. That said, the food was quite delicious and although each portion was on the small side, there are enough plates to fill oneself. I wasn’t able to take any decent photos inside, but here’s a look at the dry cleaner front.

As a one-off experience, Don’t Tell is fun, but I won’t be making a habit of taking either my clothes or myself there.

Haha, very interesting. I live on a street parallel to Aribau (I think this is the street of Tintoria Dontell). Many nights, walking home from work I was surprised to see groups of well heeled locals standing outside at ususual hours. Makes sense now. Forty euros is a bit pricy though…

The mystery is solved! I agree with you, Paul, that 40 euros is definitely on the pricey side. Especially when there are such good restaurants in Barcelona!
