Sugar Rush at Modafad

Sugar Rush, Kitsch & Bizarre, modafad, vera ciria

Sugar Rush by Kitsch & Bizarre ticks all the right boxes that give me a head rush when dealing with clothes. Sweetly sexy without being sickly due to such bizarre elements as animal and doll heads used as decorative motifs. It’s like if Elsa Schiaparelli and Salvador Dali had a child while on some sort of psychedelic substance. Feathers and fur, frills, tulle, fabulous prints, eye and animal motifs, a sumptuous color palette, all dusty roses, dirty greens, mellow yellows, off-whites, rich chocolate browns… enough to make the mouth water.

The Sugar Rush collection is made up mainly of dresses, coats, tops, blouses, hats and necklaces. Quirky elements adorn every piece of clothing, bringing a sensation of surrealism to the act of dressing up.

I decided to find out a bit more about the creative force behind the name. Laura, Manu and Caro met a year ago when they signed up to a Fashion Design Master at Elisava. Caro was kind enough to answer some questions for me.

When did Sugar Rush materialize?

Caro: The brand started approximately 7 or 8 months ago, we’re still in diapers and with lots of strength and desires to continue making Sugar Rush into a big name.

How and where did you three meet?

Caro: Laura, Manu and myself met a year ago when we ended up in the same fashion design master. I’d like to say that it was love at first sight, but I’d be lying. First we worked with other people and it wasn’t until the second semester when we realized that we had a mutual liking of each others’ style and work. We decided to bring our hyperactive heads together and that was when Sugar Rush was born, or least the three or four concepts that we juggled with before reaching what Sugar Rush represents today.

There’s three of you. How do you organize yourselves?

Caro: Manu is an architect from Brazil, who came over to Barcelona specifically to study the Elisava fashion master. She had to go back to Brazil recently, where she has started work in an important fashion firm. Laura is a technical architect and I am a graphic designer, we all have a bit in common but no initial fashion background. Organization wasn’t a problem, even when we had different ideas; we got along well right from the start. Each one of us brings ideas from her own experience that enriches the brand.

What are your expectations?

Caro: We want to be on top of the world… we really want to continue with the brand. At the beginning, when we found out that we wouldn’t be on the Pasafad runway, we were really sad. An hour later we were planning Guerilla Glamour and got our friends dressed up in the collection, with masks that said: “We don’t know how to sew… we don’t know how to lose”, it was all very fun and the audience got to see our clothes in the end. We won’t give up easily!

What are your inspirations?

Caro: Our inspirations are various, we have pop surrealism, prints and patterns based on our grandmothers’ clothes, kitsch art and strange things. We’re not afraid of color and above all, we love irony, we believe that we should have fun, we try to not have limits and do what we like. We were happily surprised that the collection was well-liked, up to this moment, our feedback had been from friends who are also a bit weird like us. It’s excellent to see the other people like the clothes we make! There will be much more coming from Sugar Rush, be prepared! Here is a video of the collection…
