Happinés in Photography

I was with the lovely Inés Ormazabal a few days ago and was able to have a quick chat with her about her photography work. She is from Bilbao but has been living here for the last five years. She arrived in 2002 to study photography and later on decided to stay.

I was able to ask Inés a few questions about what she does.

When did you decide that you would like to study photography?

Inés: I studied journalism when at university in Bilbao. One of my optional subjects was photography. I really liked the communicative directness of photos more than words. It was then that I realized that I wanted to capture images of beautiful things. I managed to publish photographs of music groups and other pieces I did for the university publications.

Do you remember your first memories of taking a photograph or of photography in general?

Inés: My parents developed their own photos at home. We had a black room and my first camera had been one that my father used. I was always surrounded by photography.

What do you most enjoy taking photos of? Do you have a favourite subject?

Inés: I love portraiture. People are interesting, there is always something new to see. But I never take photos without asking permission, I find that there is an uncomfortable element to the picture. It’s a stolen moment.

What are your inspirations?

Inés: Surprising elements. Natural elements and their accompanying atmospheres.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

Inés. I would like my work to be more widely known and recognized. The personal satisfaction that my images are out there inspiring other people.

Is there any new angle that you would like to see photography take?

Inés. It would be great to be able to actually travel through photographs. They would be like souvenirs, where during a small space of time, you could hear, feel and smell what is going on in the photo. For example, a market in Marrakesh would give the sensations of heat, the sounds of people selling their wares and the smells of the different foods on offer. It would be a great way to continue “going back” to an incredible holiday moment.

You also make felt images in the form of brooches. How exactly does that work?

Inés: The brooches are called Manuelitos. Yes, it’s another way to capture people, this time in felt. I started by making one for a friend’s birthday. I take various, different photos to capture the person, their repeated characteristics. I then make a drawing and cut the pattern form the drawing. I also have made several film characters such as Amelie, Leia from Star Wars. I made a brooch for Alaska. Each brooch takes between three to four hours to make, so I don’t make all that many.

Whether in felt or on camera, Inés has a passion for capturing perfect images and has a great sensibility, especially with children. Her heartfelt photos are a pleasure to look at. I wish her all the happines-s in the world!
